Angela Wright

Angela Wright, a short film that I wrote and am acting in, will begin shooting next week. In Angela Wright, I play Angela, a high school student whose rash decision to cheat on a math test leads to a desperate altercation with her math teacher. Bodhi Elfman  has been cast as Mr. Taylor, the math teacher.

The film will be directed by Mu Sun, who directed the short The Watch, which screened at many film festivals. Mu just completed producing and editing the film Fanboy, a Hollywood themed comedy about a man’s journey to Hollywood to audition for Sam Raimi’s For Love of the Game sequel. The film will be shot by Arthur To on the Alexa camera.

Newport Film Festival

I attended the Newport Film Festival where The Perfect Gentleman screened. Wonderful weather to be at the beach city! It was great to see some of the cast from the film, including Hart Turner and Luis Selgas (pictured.)

The festival was filled with films by my USC peers. There was even a block of short films dedicated to USC filmmakers! Congrats to my friends who worked on Jerome Sable’s film The Legend of Beaver Dam, Kyle Hausmann-Stokes’ film Ellen, Nathan Ruegger’s film Another Life and Michael Callahan’s film Kiddo!

College Emmys

I attended the College Emmys Saturday night, which honors the best in College TV and Film. In Captivity, a USC graduate film directed by Michael Koerbel,  won for Best Comedy! It was very exciting to see my classmates win and my congratulations to producers Giles Andrew and Corbin Frost who accepted the award. Double congrats to its writer, Joe Swanson, who also wrote Zombo, directed by Alberto Belli, which won Best Comedy at the 2010 College Emmys.

Alberto’s short film The Second Choice, won two awards at the 2010 Southern California Business Film Festival while I was the Director of the Competitive Event. The judges included Allan Loeb (writer, Wall Street 2,) Teddy Zee (producer, The Pursuit of Happiness,) David Bohnett (creator of Geocities,) and Randi Chugerman (casting director for ABC.) It is inspiring to see talented and experienced industry professionals supporting emerging filmmakers.

Women of Cinematic Arts

I am alumni co-chair of the Women of Cinematic Arts. The WCA, founded in 2005,  provides networking and mentoring opportunities for University of Southern California students and alumni, and encourages and supports the presence of women in creative roles in the film, television and digital industries. The organization has over 700 members.
Throughout the year, we have brunches and drink mixers where members can network. We also organize panels. We kicked off last year with the Women in Comedy panel with Jenji Kohan (showrunner of Weeds,) Annie Mumolo (writer/ co-producer of Bridesmaids,) Neely Swanson (USC adjunct faculty and former SVP of Development for David E. Kelley Productions,) and Cherry Chevapravatdumrong (writer/ producer of Family Guy.)

Our main event is our annual forum, a full day of panels and discussions about the current state of the entertainment industry. Last year, guests included: keynote speaker Linda Woolverton (Writer, Alice in Wonderland); Melissa Bernstein (Producer, Breaking Bad and Executive, Gran Via Productions); Jennifer Todd (President – Film, Mark Gordon Company); Lori McCreary (Producer, Invictus); Linda Goldstein-Knowlton (Director/Producer/Writer, The World According to Sesame Street) and Anna Sandor (Writer and Humanitas Prize winner, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front.)
We started this year with our inaugural Women of Cinematic Arts Film Festival. Dedicated to highlighting women both behind and in front of the camera, the Women of Cinematic Arts Film Festival featured a program of short films by and/or about women, followed by a reception and screening of On the Ice (2011), a new feature film that recently premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, followed by a Q&A with producer Lynette Howell (Blue Valentine, Half Nelson, Phoebe in Wonderland.)

LA Fashion Week!

I love fashion. Scouring flea markets and vintage sales for one of a kind clothing is my favorite hobby. I bet 2/3 of the clothes in my closet belonged in someone else’s closet before mine.

As much as I am passionate for vintage, I am also inspired by new designers. Last week, I attended the Gypsy 05 fashion show I loved their long flowing dresses, they have such a comfortable ease. I can’t wait to pair them up with a vintage jacket and red lipstick. You can never go wrong with red lipstick.

With this, I leave you with my favorite style quote that I discovered while reading Psychology Today (Sept. 2008): Style is optimistic. It is optimism made visible. Style presumes that you are a person of interest, that the world is a place of interest, that life is worth making the effort for.

Canadian Film Center: Comedy Lab

I was fortunate enough to attend the Canadian Film Center (CFC) event honoring North and South relationships. The event was celebrating the Telefilm Canada Features Comedy Lab, which provides opportunities for Canadian filmmakers. It was a wonderful group of Canada’s top filmmakers including Norman Jewison, Ivan Reitman, Joe Medjuck, and Eugene Levy.

While in Canada, I was involved with the CFC by acting in workshops. The workshops cast actors to read and perform scripts so that the writers and directors can continue to revise their works.  As a screenwriter, I know how important it is to hear your work read by actors.

Young Storytellers

I attended The Young Storytellers Bohemian Party on Sunday night. A wonderful event for a great cause, http://youngstorytellers.com! I’ve always loved to volunteer, starting in high school, I was president of the Social and World Issues Club which raised awareness and funds for Amnesty International and regularly volunteered at elementary schools and at wheelchair basketball. While in college, I participated in the Joint Education Program, where USC students got to teach elementary schools. Currently, I volunteer with Arts of Elysium and am involved with the Spina Bifida Association and the Achille Group.

Sedona International Film Festival

I just returned from the Sedona International Film Festival where The Perfect Gentleman premiered. Sedona was lovely and zen. It was great to escape from LA into the snow!

All of the snow reminded me of Canada! I was lucky enough to meet fellow Canadian filmmakers while at the festival. The picture below is of Canadian Zach Bernbaum (director of So Soon Forgotten,) Michael Rohrbaugh (director of The Perfect Gentleman,) and Canadians Mark Ratzlaff (director of Voodoo) and Nimisha Mukerji (co-director of 65_Red Roses.)
